Annie J. (Porter) Andrews, 1855/56-1888
ANNIE J. (PORTER) ANDREWS was born between 1855 –
1856, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her
exact birth date is unknown – no documents found to date have a birth date on
it, and records for Philadelphia births are not available prior to 1893.[1] Documents containing her age are provided in
Table 1 below.
Table 1
It is likely that her birth year can be narrowed down to the
1855 – 1856 range using the 1860 U.S. census.
As a 4-year old on that census, it is highly unlikely that her birth
year is earlier than 1885 or later than 1856.
Also, it appears that her birth month may have been between June and
November, using the 1870 U.S. census information – in the June version, she was
15, but by the 2nd enumeration in November, she was listed as 16. Unfortunately, we’ll never be sure of her
birth date.
Annie’s parents were Charles H. Porter and Margaret (Dunfee)
Porter. They lived together first in the
20th ward of Philadelphia,[2]
then moving to the 14th ward by 1870,[3]
both areas located between the Schuykill and Delaware Rivers.

On 22 May 1875, at the age of 20, Annie married Edward
Callender Andrews, Jr., in Philadelphia by a Methodist minister.[4] The couple had three children:
- Edward Callender 3rd born on 8 June 1875[5]
- Charles Hughes was born about 1876[6]
- William Arthur born on 22 May 1879.[7]
Tragically, Edward and Annie lost their son Charles in April
1881, when he was just 4 years old, of scarlet fever.[8] Annie died on 27 April 1888 of cardiac palsy
at the young age of ~34.[9] She is buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Yeadon,
Pennsylvania, in section 34, lot 60, in the same plot as her husband and son
William Arthur.[10]
