Robert D. Wylie, 1846-1929 and Rosella (Shadel) Wylie, ~1847-1906
ROBERT D. WYLIE was born on 02 May 1846 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to parents Hugh WYLIE and Jane (BROWN) WYLIE.[1] In 1850,
he lived in “north north” Philadelphia with his parents, five sisters and two
brothers.[2] The family was in the 15th ward in
1860, with Robert and his parents, one sister, two brothers and four
boarders. The 15th ward was
in what is known today as the “Fairmount” section of the city, which
encompasses Eastern State Penitentiary and its surrounding area.[3]
On 16 June 1863, Robert signed up for military duty. On the list of people subject to military duty in the 4th Congressional District of Philadelphia (ward 24), he listed his age as 20, despite the fact that he was only 17. He also provided his occupation as painter.[4] He was mustered in to Company D of the 33rd Pennsylvania Volunteers regiment as a Private on 24 June 1863 in Harrisburg, and worked as a carriage painter. He was discharged from the military after only 34 days of service due to disability, as he “was wounded in right leg at the shelling of Carlisle, Pa, on the first day of July 1863; that in consequence of said wound his right leg has since been amputated.”[5] Further, on his Invalid Pension form, it said he was wounded by the explosion of a shell from the armory at Carlisle. His father Hugh Wylie was one of the witnesses attesting to his injury.[6]
The 33rd Pennsylvania Volunteers were formed during the emergency mobilization prompted by Robert E. Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania in order to defend approaches to Harrisburg. Carlisle had been occupied by Confederate troops under the leadership of Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart beginning 27 June 1863. On 30 June, the Confederate forces withdrew from Carlisle towards Gettysburg, and the 33rd was sent to the Cumberland Valley. On 01 July, as the Union troops under the leadership of Maj. Gen. William F. Smith began to return to Carlisle, the Confederate cavalry appeared outside the town and demanded their surrender. The Union refused. Confederate artillery then began shelling Carlisle, and the bombardment continued for several hours, damaging buildings and setting portions of the Carlisle barracks on fire. This is what caused the armory explosion that injured Robert.
Robert was mustered out on 04 August 1863 in Philadelphia. He received an artificial leg sometime before August 1870.[7]
On 24 June 1867, Robert married ROSELLA D. SHADEL at the Nazareth Episcopal Methodist Church located at 13th & Spring Garden Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a telephone operator and was living at 2226 Callowhill Road (still in the 15th ward) at the time of their marriage.
Rosella SHADEL was likely born in September 1847 in Reading,
Berks County, Pennsylvania to parents John Charles SHADEL and Mary (??) SHADEL.[8] Her
birth date is not provided in any document and her birth record has not been
located. However, the probable date is based on the following information:
Rosella and her family lived in Alsace Township, Reading, in 1850; she had one sister, Mary, at the time.[9] By 1860 the family had moved to Philadelphia, where her father worked as an engineer for the railroad.[10]
After the 1867 marriage, Robert and Rosella started their
own family. Ulysses Grant WYLIE was born 19 August 1868.[11] In
1870, the three of them lived in the 15th ward with Rosella’s
parents and her brother John. Robert was
a telegraph operator.[12] Two
more children came along over the next two years – Marian Verbeck WYLIE on 25
September 1870[13]
and Rosella WYLIE on 02 November 1872.[14]
After the birth of their third child, it is unknown what
happened to the marriage of Robert and Rosella.
Robert was admitted to the Dayton Ohio disabled veteran’s home on 07
October 1878, just six years after little Rosella’s birth. He listed himself as a widower with three
children, despite the fact that his wife Rosella was still living.[15]
On 05 December 1879, he married Lavinia Ella PEARSON in
Miami County, Ohio. Robert’s signature
on this marriage document affirmed that he “has no lawful wife living” – while
Rosella was still living in Philadelphia and no divorce documents have been
located.[16]
In 1880, Robert and Lavinia lived in Monroe Township, Miami
County, Ohio with Lavinia’s parents and siblings. Robert was a farm laborer.[17] At the
same time, Rosella lived with her parents, brother and three children at 2203
Vine Street in Philadelphia, listed as a housekeeper.[18] In the
1887 Philadelphia City directory, Rosella was listed at 2203 Vine Street as the
“wid Robert” (even though he also was still living).[19]
On 17 November 1888, Rosella married Edward FURLONG in
Camden, New Jersey.[20] So it
appears that both Robert and Rosella designated themselves as widowers and married
illegally.
Despite the fact that the 1890 census has been destroyed, Robert
was found on the military schedules of that census. He lived in the village of
Laura, Miami County, Ohio and listed his service with the “38th”
Pennsylvania Volunteers [note that this is an error – it was the 33rd
regiment], company D, as a Private for 34 days. It also notes the “loss of
right leg above the knee.”[21]
Robert continued to live in Ohio for the remainder of his
life. On 30 April 1897, he was appointed as the U.S. Postmaster for the village
of Laura[22].
He did take trips back to Philadelphia as noted in two newspaper articles:
In 1900, Rosella, now married to Edward FURLONG, lived at
2922 Thompson Street, Philadelphia, with her daughter, son-in-law, and two
granddaughters. Edward was not living at
the residence with the family, and Rosella again noted herself as a widower
(although both Robert and Edward were still living at this time). She worked as
a dressmaker.[23]
Robert lived with Lavinia in Laura village in 1900 with
their two children, Noah and Zula, and Lavinia’s brother. He was working again
as a painter.[24]
On 12 April 1906, Rosella FURLONG (nee WYLIE) died of pleuro
pneumonia meningitis; she had moved to Norristown, Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania before her death.[25] She is
buried at Fernwood Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania, in section 24, plot 156,
northeast corner, the same plot as her parents.[26]
In 1910, Robert still lived in Laura village, Union
Township, Miami County, Ohio, with Lavinia, their daughter Zula Maud, Zula’s
husband Charles ZINK and their daughter. He was not working at this time,
listing his occupation as “own income.”[27] They
moved to 517 Mulberry Street, Troy, Concord Township, Miami County, Ohio, by
1920, and lived with the ZINK family.[28]
On 31 August 1927, Lavinia died of an unknown cause.[29] Two years later, on 12 October 1929, Robert
WYLIE died of acute dilation of the heart following myocardial insufficiency.
He had still been living in Troy, Ohio.[30] Lavinia
and Robert are buried together at Riverside Cemetery in Troy, Ohio.[31]
